Six morbid or creepy writing prompts to get your creative juices flowing.
# 1 The Black Mass
The black mass came before us in the blink of an eye but it was gone just as quickly as it had appeared.
Things to consider…
- What is the mass?
- Who’s watching it?
- What is the mass doing?
- What are the characters feeling as they glance upon it?
#2 Don’t open your eyes…
You don’t like to open your eyes at night because you’re afraid of what you might see in the dark.
Things to consider…
- What does the room look like?
- What is the character afraid of?
- What time is it?
- Is it day or night?
- Does the character’s fear materialize?
#3 12:03
You were woken up by a cold sensation on your arm, glancing over you saw that the clock read 12:03 and every instinct inside of you told you not to turn around. Realizing that the feeling that woke you up was actually a bony stroking your form, you froze. Ever so slightly you could hear someone or something breathing behind you, forcing you to shut your eyes and will your heart to stop racing. However, the silence was broken when the creature spoke in the most disturbing tone you had ever heard, “no you’re too precious.”
Things to consider…
- Who was behind the character?
- What do think they mean when they said that the character was ‘too precious’?
- describe their voice, what made it so disturbing?
- What did the character do?
- Is this the first time an event like this has occurred?
- Is the time significant?
#4 Where the bad people go
There is a place I know of where the bad people go. I am not a bad person, yet I am their leader.
Things to consider…
- Describe the location
- Who is speaking?
- What could they have done to become their leader?
#5 The friend only I can see
Ever since you were little you had a friend you would play with. However, you are the only one who can see this’friend’ and the only one who can understand what they say. One day, one of your parents asks you about the friend you were playing with, getting excited you give them a detailed description of your companion but your answer is far from what they were expecting. And if that wasn’t creepy enough, what you said next was a real cause for concern.
Things to consider…
- How old is the child?
- Who is their friend?
- How do the parents initially react?
- What do they have to fear?
#6 Check behind you
You’ve been driving down the same road for some time now. There hasn’t another car with you for miles now and you like having the road to yourself. Looking at the gas gauge, you realize that you should fill up soon and see a gas station in the distance. Speeding up, you reach in a few minutes and park your car next to a tank. While doing so another car pulls in behind you which is strange since you were alone up until this point. You take care of business, pay up and head out, that same car trailing behind. You pay it no mind but half an hour into the drive you realize that it looks different yet still the same…
Things to consider…
- where was the character going?
- why were they going to that specific place?
- How did the car look? How did it change?
- why didn’t the character notice it before?
- Was anyone in the car?
